Voices in Opposition to the Coup in Brazil

On the weekend, the daily newspaper junge Welt, in cooperation with alternative media from Brazil, will publish two pages on the opposition to the coup in Brazil.

Authors and representatives of initiatives from a number of parts of the country, as well as Brazilians living in Canada, France and Germany, have contributed. They show excerpts from a movement, that is struggling against an attempt to take back all the progressive measures regarding social- and human rights, which were achieved under the governments of Lula da Silva and Dilma Rousseff.

Over the past three weeks, Brazils interim president Michel Temer has been in office. Together with the right wing opposition, he has installed a government, which in no way represents the population of the largest country in South America. After the suspension of the legitimate president Dilma Rousseff, due to a threadbare impeachment process, the political direction has changed – both within Brazil and towards other countries. There are clear indications and evidence that Rousseffs fall from power is the result of a plot by politicians entangled in corruption, who wished to become immune to ongoing judicial investigations and are trying to sabotage these.

Throughout Brazil, their is massive resistance to the institutional coup. Partisan media corporations ignore the resistance or make it look weaker than it is. They also played an active role in poisoning the political climate and stirring up sentiment against the Workers Party of Lula da Silva and Dilma Rousseff.

Junge Welt prides itself with a special emphasis on reporting on developments in Latin America. The newspaper has closely followed the dramatic developments in Brazil over the past few months.

The article will be available online from 7pm CET today, Friday, 3rd June. Aside from the German version, a portuguese version will also be available online on different brazilian portals. English and Spanish versions are currently being prepared. Interested media and web portals can make an agreement with junge Welt to freely use the article and RSS feeds will be provided.
